What does ESPR mean?
ESPR is the EU framework for sustainable products, ecodesign and the Digital Product Passport.
ESPR entered into force on 18 July 2024 and replaces Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC. It is a framework for almost all physical goods, including components and intermediate products; exemptions include food, feed, medicinal products, living organisms and certain vehicle aspects already covered by sector law.
Why does it matter for DPP and compliance?
ESPR is the main legal basis for the general Digital Product Passport. Under Article 9, a DPP becomes mandatory only for products covered by an applicable delegated act. Article 10 requires data carriers, unique product identifiers and open, interoperable, machine-readable data.
What should teams prepare?
Companies should not treat ESPR as a single deadline. The 2025-2030 working plan prioritises iron and steel, aluminium, textiles, furniture, tyres, mattresses and horizontal repairability and recycling measures. Binding duties arrive through later delegated acts.
